Other information Yes, there are classic cars that can sometimes be bought new, and here's one of them.
Sharing its architecture with Mazda MX 5, the Fiat 124 Spider was well-born to begin with. Its specific body treatment with a touch of Maserati immediately appealed to me.
I was thinking of buying an Abarth version, but when it came time to sign the order only automatics were available in France, so I opted for a normal car with a mechanical gearbox. The salesman advised me to wait six months for the next boat to bring them from Japan, but no other boat was ever to carry any onboard as Fiat management had decided to pull the plug on the experiment... and as you know, poor sales results make for good collector cars of tomorrow.
Enthusiasts didn't exactely flock to this very cute little car although it has a lot going for it: the engine delivers real pleasure, it has the best soft top I've ever seen on a cabriolet, from the Spitfire to the Rolls-Royce Corniche included, allowing you to open/close it in 5 seconds at 100km/h (!), fully independent suspension, the communicative steering... right down to the radio and its loudspeaker in the headrest.
Performance that would make a Spider Fiat Dino jealous, and driving pleasure that puts an immediate smile on your face. And what's more, you see little or none of it on the road ... like a collector's car!
